Minding Glial Cells in the Novel Understandings of Mental Illness
Traditionally, neuroscience has focused mainly on clarifying the roles of neurons in the pathophysiological mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disorders, and glial cells such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia have long been ignored in that context. However, glial cells have gradually been highlighted since around 2000, and now neuroscience could not exist without exploring the role of glial cells in various neuropsychiatric disorders. Nonetheless, still, the deeper knowledge on causal or disease-modulating effects of glial cells in neuropsychiatric disorders is waiting to be explored.
This Research Topic focuses on the most recent developments and ideas in the study of glial cells (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia) targeting neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, PTSD, delirium, and traumatic brain injury with psychological and behavioral abnormalities. We aim to gather Original Research articles, Reviews, Perspectives, Commentaries, and Case Reports. A variety of methods/approaches are welcome from molecular, cellular, and pharmacological approaches using in vitro/in vivo experimental methods to translational approaches and/or two species models using animal and human tissues. Psychopathological interactions between neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia may be related to some specific psychiatric symptoms. To clarify such interactions, novel (reverse) translational approaches are especially warranted such as (1) postmortem, PET, and other brain imaging studies and (2) cellular model studies using human iPS- and/or directly-induced glial cells in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. Psychopathology is not limited to psychiatric disorders; it can also be caused by organic brain syndromes and physical diseases. Research on the role of glia in these subjects is also welcome.
Let us elucidate the roles of minding glial cells by studying the roles of glia in the mind and brain, which consists of the conscious and the unconscious.
