About this Research Topic
The proportion of women and men in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at undergraduate levels remains unequal in some parts of the world. Moreover, there is a lack of representation of women in senior positions in research. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) data in 2016, less than 30% of researchers in STEM are women. Furthermore, COVID-19 has been particularly difficult for researchers who also have responsibilities as a carer, of which up to 80% are women, which has led to a decrease in publications amongst women authors.
Female researchers have been crucial to scientific advances, although they have often gone unacknowledged. There is a need for tools and resources that advance women’s involvement in research and platforms that showcase their achievements, innovation and creativity. This Research Topic aims to promote interdisciplinarity and worldwide representation, welcoming opinions on challenges/issues/advances pertaining to genetics research.
This Research Topic would like to highlight female contributions to Genetics and will therefore welcome:
- Perspectives on a specific field of Genetics research inspired, started or sparked by a woman
- Articles celebrating outstanding female researchers and their contributions to Genetics
- Ethics in Genetics research
- Research on sex differences in human genetics
- Science is interdisciplinary and we need to adopt this approach more than ever. In that spirit we welcome articles that share an innovative interdisciplinary approach to genetics and other fields.
- Submissions are encouraged from minority groups and we aim to have a global representation.
- We emphasize articles on science and communication, science and diplomacy.
We strongly encourage the submission of manuscripts where the lead and/or corresponding author is female, and we recommend early career researchers to team up with senior female colleagues. However, we will welcome the submission of any article within the scope above irrespective of gender.
