About this Research Topic
The Central-South America and Caribbean regions are affected regularly by natural disasters from hydrometeorological origin. The year 2020 showed a record number of hurricanes that affected Central America and the Caribbean region showing how vulnerable are those areas to extremes of climate and to climate change. The Pantanal and Amazon regions in South America exhibited in recent years drought situations that increase the risk of fires that affected natural and human systems. Actions pre-disaster needed for disaster risk reduction are still incipient in those regions and in some countries are almost non-existent, being focused more on disaster management (pots-disaster).
In this Research Topic our objective is to show the state-of-the-art on disaster risk reduction initiatives in the countries and in the regions considered, together with an assessment of hazards that affect those countries. Discussions such as monitoring and early warning of natural disasters of hydrometeorological origin, vulnerability mapping, trends in climate extremes and other issues considered in the Sendai Framework and the ODS relevant disaster impact assessments are some of the subjects to be covered in this collection.
While the focus is regional, we expect contributions from research and operational groups from the region and from outside.
In this Research Topic our objective is to show the state-of-the-art on disaster risk reduction initiatives in the countries and in the regions considered, together with an assessment of hazards that affect those countries.
