About this Research Topic
Many plants and other natural substances are used as sources of bioactive natural compounds. They can produce new functional chemical molecules with specialized structure and/or activity, rich in complex and unique microbial groups. Natural products with novel and diverse structures are of great significance and value in the development of chemical biology, drug research and development. Novel structures may bring new or improved activity, or elucidate new mechanisms of action, providing exciting new avenues in drug discovery. We therefore welcome submissions covering novel structures, as well as advances in structural analysis. The absolute configuration of natural products should be evidence-based and determined accurately, with special focus on the use of new methodologies. We also welcome the design and modification of bioactive compounds for studying structure-activity relationships to search for potential new drugs.
The aim of the current Research Topic is to cover promising, recent and novel research trends in natural products research in traditional medicine. Areas to be covered may include:
• Isolation, structure elucidation, and bioactivity of novel compounds from traditional medicine
• Investigation of physiologically active compounds from terrestrial and marine plants, animals, fermentation, and plant tissue culture
• Design, modification, and structure-activity relationship study of bioactive compounds from traditional medicine
• Metabolites of foreign natural compounds and their derivatives in human or animals
Keywords: bioactive natural compounds, physiologically activities, metabolites, structure-activity relationship, molecular modification
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
