Clinical Aspects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Consequences

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disease in clinical practice. Its prevalence is reported to be 20-30% of the population and increasing by age. During sleep, OSA patients develop numerous intermittent hypoxemia events leading to multi-organ consequences. Basic research shows that OSA is related with systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and neurotransmitter activation particularly in the renin-algiotensin-aldosterone system. These may result in cardiovascular disease consequences including hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmia, left ventricular hypertrophy, cardiac failure, and stroke.
Despite the high impact of OSA, clinicians may be unaware and lack knowledge on these cardiovascular consequences. Delayed workups and treatments of OSA in these cardiovascular conditions may lead to long term morbidities and mortality. This topic on clinical aspects of OSA and these cardiovascular diseases may emphasize and remind clinicians on these main consequences of OSA including clinical epidemiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, treatments, and prognosis.

The aim of this research topic is to collect manuscripts focused on a wide range of clinical aspects of OSA and cardiovascular consequences. Clinical aspects may include
