About this Research Topic
This Research Topic will focus on the research of suitable pathways to reach negative emissions in the industrial sector. A holistic platform is sought where technological developments should be put in the context of the expected evolution of the energy system and of the industrial production. In addition, the necessary socio-political and regulatory conditions must be in place to ensure the feasibility of the proposed solutions. Therefore, this Research Topic has an interdisciplinary approach where the studies will constitute necessary building blocks for the realization of negative emissions in industry. Theoretical and experimental engineering studies will be welcome to assess the technologies that might contribute to the final goal of negative emissions. System studies will be considered, as well as environmental and techno-economic analyses. Finally, studies covering societal aspects will be included if addressing relevant issues for delivering the overall goal of negative emissions in industry.
This Research Topic would like contributions in the following areas:
• Technologies underpinning negative emissions in industry such as technologies for CO2 capture and for biomass conversion and utilisation
• Industrial processes using biomass and integrated with CO2 capture. Process integration, techno-economic analysis, LCA including supply chain.
• Low- to negative-emission hydrogen for decarbonising industry
• Industrial clustering, CCUS as energy storage mechanism in industry and CO2 utilisation integrated with industrial processes
• Energy system analyses, circular economy and roadmaps to net zero scenarios
• Policy mechanisms and business models for negative emissions
• Social impact and acceptance of CCUS in industry
