Background

Zirconia has been successfully applied as a structural material for crown and bridge restorations and dental ceramic abutments. Owing to its high mechanical strength and excellent tissue compatibility, since the late 1980s, zirconia also has been used for manufacturing femoral heads for total hip replacements. More recently, zirconia has also been evaluated as an alternative base material for endosseous oral implants. Most of the zirconia used in dentistry is in tetragonal zirconia polycrystals, particularly yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP). However, Y-TZP may undergo low-temperature degradation (LDT) in the oral environment. In 1998 a Ce-TZP/Al2O3 nanocomposite (NANOZR) was developed in Japan. NANOZR had greater flexural strength and fracture toughness than Y-TZP and is able to be resistant to LDT. However, many unclear points about biocompatibility of zirconia as a biomaterial still remain.

The goal of this Research Topic is to welcome current research on zirconia, focused on the development or surface modifications of zirconia that would result in improvement of biological response. Various surface modification methods of improvement of biological response may include chemical, physical, electrochemical and biological modifications. Understanding current trends in the development of such novel dental materials would provide insights and ideas to readers and other participating researchers, while providing opportunity for collaborations. The Research Topic also aims to contribute to the development of novel dental biomaterials by providing opportunities for industry-academia-government collaboration and promoting international collaborative translational research.

We welcome articles related to the development of bioactive surface of zirconia or evaluation of biocompatibility of zirconia and their mechanical properties. This may include (but is not limited to) the following topics:
-Development of surface modification methods that can improve the bioactivity or biocompatibility of zirconia;
-Evaluation of biocompatibility, bioactivity, and biological response of zirconia in dental devices;
-Mechanical properties and surface properties of zirconia in dental devices;
-Clinical case reports of zirconia in dental devices;
-Methods of material design for improving biological activity of zirconia;
-Reviews of current trends of zirconia in dental devices.
