About this Research Topic
Megacities (including coastal megacities) that contain more than 8-10 million inhabitants are under rapid urbanization and socio-economic growth. Larger populations and property density has led to a significantly higher flood risk in these locations. Moreover, many megacities are located in areas with high flood risk. We are increasingly witnessing severe urban floods in coastal and inland megacities caused by cyclonic effects (Typhoons in Asia and W Pacific; Hurricanes in U.S and elsewhere) enhancing surges. This phenomenon is likely to increase illustrated by the future projections made by the IPCC AP4 and AP5 reports.
Many past extreme events have shown that current practices cannot cope with this challenge causing huge economic cost, severe injuries and multiple causalities in global megacities. We witnessed substantial investments over the last decades on drainage and engineering projects. Now is the time to rethink how to achieve sustainable and better flood resilience to include social, economic and environmental aspects. To do this, it is crucial to explore how future practices can be improved in order to increase urban flood resilience and deliver sustainable flood management strategies in the long-term.
This Research Topic aims to expand upon our scientific knowledge regarding understanding the challenges, barriers, solutions and lessons of improving urban flood resilience and flood management strategies. The main focus is to gather worldwide practices, research outputs, lessons and synergies, which can be helpful for stakeholders to improve current practices for facing future challenges on climate and human-induced factors.
In this Research Topic, we welcome researchers to contribute their latest research on the ways to address urban flood resilience and how to conduct the better and long-term sustainable practice under cost-effective conditions, addressing human safety and well-being to protect vulnerable communities and contributing to nature and urban ecosystem services. Here we are seeking for manuscripts on the following topics:
• Latest hydrological modeling and simulation to understand climate change (coastal sea-level and intensive rainfall) and its consequences for flood risk for megacities;
• Approaches and strategies to achieve holistic flood resilience
• Socio-economic assessment and models to address the long-term flood resilience
• Role of soft measures – flood preparedness, prevention and post-flood arrangements
• Implementation and governance issues – challenges, barriers and opportunities
• Flood risk and social justice
In this Research Topic, we expect a wide range of research and welcome authors to contribute any article type listed by acceptable by Frontiers.
