About this Research Topic
The tumor microenvironment describes the non-cancerous cells present in the tumor as well as the proteins produced by all of the cells that support the growth and metastasis of the cancer cells. The overall biochemical processes that occur in tumors to provide energy for cellular function and growth are classified as tumor metabolism. Various studies have shown that tumor microenvironment and metabolism contribute to the progression of cancers.
Current studies suggest that abnormal epigenetic modifications can absolutely affect the regulation of the tumor microenvironment and metabolism in various cancers. The use of modern genomic, proteomic, metabolomics, and functional analytical techniques has contributed to identifying novel genes and signalling networks involved in epigenetic modifications in the tumor microenvironment and metabolism. Moreover, the use of high-throughput techniques in combination with bioinformatics and systems biology approaches has aided the interrogation of clinical samples.
Despite much progress having been made in understanding the tumor microenvironment and metabolism, the role of epigenetic modifications remains largely unknown. Here we plan to solicit further research into the mechanisms of epigenetic regulation in the tumor microenvironment and metabolism in human cancers, and corresponding strategies which will help achieve long-lasting disease control and provide survival benefits to patients with advanced cancer.
The current Research Topic of Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences and Frontiers in Oncology focuses on publishing Original Research, Methods, Review, and Opinion articles focusing on:
