An increased number of annual endurance and ultra-endurance races, and number of finishers of master athletes has been observed during the last decades. Master athletes compete not only for the glory of participation but also for the achievement of high performance. On the other hand, the age-related decline of physiological characteristics (e.g. maximal oxygen uptake, VO2MAX) associated with performance implies that the role of these characteristics might vary by age, too. For instance, it is well-known that performance of elite marathon runners depends on VO2MAX, anaerobic threshold and running economy, but less information exists about physiological predictors of performance in master athletes.
