Background

In less than three months, the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become an unprecedented pandemic with clinical manifestations ranging from mild respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia with an average case fatality rate of approximately 5%. The management of COVID-19 patients is a great challenge for anesthesiologists and intensivists. This includes the anesthetic care for surgical patients with suspected and confirmed COVID-19, intubation outside of the operating rooms, oxygenation and ventilation support for patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, and their participation in patient care in other aspects amid this pandemic. Although we have gained a great deal of knowledge about this disease, we are still struggling in treating it and caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients.

How to protect healthcare personnel is another challenge. The inadequate supply of personal protective equipment is a major toll to the healthcare systems globally. The stress, anxiety, and depression constitutes another challenge to patients and healthcare workers, and is exacerbated in the case of treating critically ill patients and for the anesthesiologists. It is essential to share the experience and lessons we have learned during the care for COVID-19 patients. These special articles will provide a guidance for the anesthesiologists and intensivists who are providing the care for COVID-19 patients.

The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight the most pertinent clinical experience and the relevant research and present a practical guidance to the healthcare workers involved in perioperative and critical care for COVID-19 patients. The goal is to improve the quality of care for COVID-19 patients. Submissions are welcome for the following article types: Original Research, Opinion, Review, Mini Review, Systematic Review, Study Protocol, Cases Report, and Hypothesis and Theory.

We particularly welcome contributions that include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

- Anesthetic care for COVID-19 patients undergoing different surgical procedures;
- Airway management in patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19;
- Critical care for critically ill COVID-19 patients;
- Mental health, wellbeing, and the relevant interventions amid the COVID-19 pandemic;
- Self-protection of the anesthesiologists and intensivists amid the COVID-19 pandemic;
- The basic and clinical studies on the pathophysiology and immune response of COVID-19 related acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, or multiple organ injury.
