The emergence of the highly infectious and novel Coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2 first reported in Wuhan, China has led to a global pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared it as a public health emergency of international concern. The number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases is rising fast and has surpassed 1,346,974 in 209 countries as of early April 2020. All healthcare professionals, including dental healthcare providers are at a higher risk of coming into close contact with COVID-19 patients than the general public. Specifically, unknown interaction with COVID-19 patients or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infected persons in the dental care settings may cause significant exposure of dental staff, if proper infection control procedures are not in place. Therefore, it is imperative to identify the risk associated with individual patients before subjected to dental treatment. Moreover, due to a new norm of engaging in oral healthcare amidst COVID-19, dental hospitals, dental schools and public oral health experts are exploring safer and more secure environments to provide oral healthcare for the population.
This Research Topic aims to bring infection control experts, public health professionals, educators and researchers working on oral healthcare together to provide a comprehensive guide on COVID-19 and Dentistry.
