About this Research Topic
Currently, more than 80% of patients with clinically localized PCa undergo definite treatment. Most common treatment options are radical prostatectomy (RP) and radiotherapy (RT). Novel treatment options are focal therapies such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) or cryoablation.
But not only patients with localized PCa but also patients with locally advanced or even metastatic PCa are discussed to benefit from local therapies. Moreover, local salvage therapy after failed initial local therapy is regularly performed.
All of these therapies come along with a different pattern of early and late side effects. Urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, bladder outlet obstruction and urorectal fistulae are well-known sequelae and affect a large number of patients.
Given excellent survival rates of 90% overall and 99% cancer-specific survival at 10 years, urologists face and will face in future a relevant proportion of patients who present with one of these PCa treatment related sequelae.
The goal of this Research Topic is to provide readers, researchers and physicians a comprehensive overview of strategies to avoid sequelae of PCa therapy and to summarize state of the art and future perspectives of management of sequelae of PCa therapy.
In particular, the Research Topic will first offer the opportunity to explore developments of different therapies with focus on reduction of side effects. Intensity modulated radiation therapy, robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, focal therapy and the use of engineered tissue are examples of these efforts that are already in clinical use. Second current treatment options and trends in treatment of these side effects are illustrated.
The Research Topic aims to include original articles on, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Developments of radical prostatectomy with special regards to reduction of treatment related side effects
• Developments of radiation therapy for Prostate Cancer: Reduction of side effects
• Developments of focal therapy with regards to reduction of treatment related side effects
• Tissue engineering and its potential to reduce Prostate Cancer treatment sequelae
• Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in the management of prostate-cancer-treatment sequelae
• Current management of urinary incontinence due to Prostate Cancer treatment
• Current management of erectile dysfunction due to Prostate Cancer treatment
• Current management of membranous urethral strictures due to radiation
• Current management of complications of the posterior urethra after Prostate Cancer treatment
