About this Research Topic
Two-dimensional (2D) cell culturing has been the predominant method used to culture cells and although it plays a vital role in research, it is limited by its inability to accurately represent tissue cells in vitro. Three-dimensional (3D) cell culturing techniques are very unique in the way that they allow different types of cells to be replicated in vivo while providing an accurate representation of cell growth in vitro. Cells grown in a 3D model have proven to be more physiologically relevant and showed improvements in numerous studies of biological mechanisms. Moreover, 3D cell cultures offer the exciting potential for the development of novel medicines and increased productivity, with the most common applications being disease modelling, oncology and drug screening.
