About this Research Topic
Fish protein accounts for roughly 20% of the global population's animal protein intake. Fish are unique and rich sources of omega-3 (n−3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) particularly EPA and DHA with beneficial impacts in a range of human pathologies such as cardiovascular diseases. Fish farming is the sole way of meeting the world's fish needs. High-quality feed is crucial for fish growth, health, and reproduction.
For a long time, the focus of the traditional fish nutrition studies was mainly on nutrient requirements and fish metabolism, whereas during the recent decades the interaction of nutrients and physiological responses have gained much attention. For instance, why high-carbohydrate feeds induce “diabetes” in fish, and whether fish have complete LC-PUFA biosynthesis.
This Research Topic aims to collect studies (including original research, perspectives, reviews, and mini reviews) that investigate and discuss the following areas:
1) Nutritional physiology and metabolism of fish
2) The effects of nutrients on fish physiology
