About this Research Topic
This Research Topic is a collection of perspectives on the impact that Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilization (CCU) may have on our lives, two-to-three decades from now. Authors are highly reputed scholars, each having a deep knowledge of the field they are describing and a long lasting (>10-15 y) track-record of research in the field. The collection paints a picture of the potential of CCU and its impact on the lives of future generations. It is not a retrospective view (review), it is forward looking, it is a vision.
Papers each focus on a specific application of CO2, illustrating the point we can reach by 2040-2050 and how we can get there. Despite being visionary, papers are based on solid scientific bases and are not free-fly exercises.
A number of specialist fields are discussed, from “Capture from the atmosphere”, as we imagine it will be in three decades, to “Carbonation of sludge”, “Conversion into Fine-Chemicals and Polymers”, “Conversion into energy products (C1 and Cn)”, “Photochemical and Photo-Bio-Electrochemical processes”, “Plasma technologies”, “Enhanced biological fixation”, “Integration of CO2 conversion and Biomass processing”, and other specialty topics including a “Economic assessment”.
Prof Michele Aresta and Prof Angela Dibenedetto are both affiliated with the startup IC2R. Guest Editor Prof Andrew Bocarsly declares no competing interests with regards to the Topic subject.
