Frontiers publishing partnerships update – autumn 2023

The latest news on our collaborations with scholarly societies. Credit: Frontiers Welcome from Robyn Mugridge, head of publishing partnerships The publishing partnerships team saw a continued growth trend in our community of partners. Submissions to our partner journals have continued to go up with a 27% increase on the same period last year. So far this year, our portfolio of partners has published 15% more reviews and 150% more special issues than last year. We welcomed new associate editors, bringing our team up to 441. Our teams have also started to roll out an enhanced communications package to increase journal awareness and visibility, achieving over 40 million social media impressions to date. Welcoming community partnerships We’ve expanded our program to include community partnerships. This is a novel program for societies who wish to partner with an established Frontiers journal and collaborate on publishing projects which may benefit their members. Through our tailored community partnership offering, we provide societies with new opportunities to connect with the global research community, the work done by our society partners. Frontiers and the University of Kansas announce ‘flat-fee’ publishing partnership

Gold open access publisher Frontiers has established a ‘flat-fee’ partnership agreement with the University of Kansas (KU). This will be Frontiers’ second ‘flat-fee’ agreement in North America and is the first to include the publisher’s entire portfolio of journals. Credit: Frontiers Under the one-year agreement, which will commence in January 2024, corresponding authors affiliated with the University of Kansas’ Lawrence and Edwards campuses, will receive unlimited publishing across all 223 Frontiers journals without charge to the researcher. Scott Hanrath, associate dean of research engagement at the University of Kansas said: “KU Libraries is committed to meeting the needs of KU researchers by leading efforts that move scholarly publishing toward a more open, sustainable future. Our agreement with Frontiers will make it easier and more affordable for KU-affiliated researchers to publish their work in open access journals.” Ronald Buitenhuis, Frontiers’ head of institutional partnerships said: “It is our pleasure to welcome the University of Kansas to our family of more than 700 institutional partners and to celebrate this agreement which, for the first time under our new ‘flat-fee’ model, covers publishing in all Frontiers’ journals. Frontiers publishing partnerships: collaborating to advance open access

Credit: Frontiers At Frontiers we value partnerships with learned societies as a driving force, both in the academic publishing landscape and in the advancement of the open access movement. In collaboration with our society partners, we are proud to be accelerating impactful change in academic publishing. Leading their loyal membership base by example, our society partners are innovators with long-standing traditions and values. The Swiss School of Public Health is a case in point. Their pioneering Young Researcher Editorial (YRE) program was created for PhD students and their YRE Board sources and reviews opinion pieces, allowing members to accrue practical experience while also developing a working understanding of the academic publishing process. This commitment to community building, knowledge sharing, and the fostering of research excellence, makes societies crucial to the advancement of open access in all its forms. Frontiers institutional partnerships update – autumn 2023

The latest news on our collaborations with research institutions, libraries, consortia, and funders. Welcome from Franck Vazquez, director of partnerships at Frontiers Frontiers is committed to making trusted science openly available to all. Something we believe to be crucial in a world facing unprecedented challenges from climate change to fake news and conflict. However, the full potential of open science remains untapped with 60% of the world’s total annual scientific output still hidden behind paywalls. It is our conviction that science funded by all should be available to all, for the benefit of all. That is why Frontiers is working towards the goal of having all publications covered by institutional agreements within the next five years. We have recently announced Frontiers’ partnership with the University of California (UC), piloting a flat fee agreement under which corresponding authors at any of the UC’s ten campuses can publish in 19 selected Frontiers journals without limit and without charge. Our team will continue to work closely with institutions to co-create new and inclusive partnership models that work with their budget cycles, and which move the financial responsibility away from the author. British Antarctic Survey and British Geological Survey form publishing agreement with Frontiers – JISC national open access deal 

The head office of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and two of its research groups, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the British Geological Survey (BGS), via NERC Library Service, have joined the national open access deal agreed between Jisc Collections and Frontiers.   This landmark deal provides a simplified and streamlined route to open access publishing for researchers in the UK, who publish 7% of the world’s research.  This institutional agreement means that eligible NERC head office employees and BAS and BGS researchers may publish in any Frontiers journal with a simplified process, and at a reduced cost to the centres, as articles may benefit from a 10% membership discount.  The NERC Library Service supports researchers in making their research more widely available. Frontiers pilots ‘flat fee’ publishing partnership with the University of California

Gold open access publisher Frontiers has announced its first consortium partnership in North America with the University of California (UC). The one-year agreement will also pilot a novel partnership model: UC will receive unlimited publishing in 20 specified Frontiers journals for a pre-agreed annual flat fee. Credit: Frontiers The eligible journals have been selected by UC from Frontiers’ Humanities and Social Sciences and Sustainability titles as being from underrepresented and under-funded disciplines. The deal will allow corresponding UC authors at any of the University of California’s 10 campuses, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), to publish in these journals without limit and without APC. “As a native open access publisher, Frontiers is a natural ally in our efforts to advance a more open, equitable, and transparent publishing landscape,” said Miranda Bennett, director of shared collections at UC’s California Digital Library. “This pilot allows us to collaborate with a major publisher of UC-authored research as we explore new models for partnerships between institutions and native open access publishers.” For Frontiers, the agreement with UC is an important opportunity to develop and refine its ‘flat fee’ partnership models. RPTU forms publishing agreement with Frontiers

RPTU has formed an institutional partnership agreement for open access publishing with Frontiers. This institutional agreement means that as of 1st September 2023 eligible RPTU researchers can publish in any Frontiers journal, with a simplified process and articles may benefit from a 5% partnership discount. The University Library RPTU supports its researchers in making their research more widely available. This agreement will further encourage RPTU researchers to publish open access, increasing the volume of research openly available. This year we have welcomed official policy recommendations in both Europe and North America calling for immediate open access to publicly funded research and we have successfully onboarded more than 40 new partners, each bringing unique contributions to our growing community. Our partnership models are designed to help alleviate the financial burden of publishing on individual researchers and to ensure that everyone reaps the benefits of open access. As our community grows, we are working hard to develop these models, with the goal of providing new sustainable and predictable options that align with library budgeting plans and open science priorities. Frontiers publishing partnerships update – summer 2023

The publishing partnerships team is pleased to share the latest developments in our team alongside updates from our growing community of partners. Credit: Frontiers Responsive and efficient Our partner journals have experienced a positive start to 2023 with a rise of over 20% in submission numbers in the first six months of the year, compared to the same period last year. We’re proud to have achieved an average decision time of just 56 days from submission to decision across all partner journals, while consistently responding to partner requests for support within an average of less than two days. Our team is going the extra mile for our partners. Ahead of eligibility for PMC indexing for newly launched journals, we have provided a tailored service to support authors with self-deposition, resulting in 46 articles being indexed to date. New communications support for partners We are committed to supporting our partners to achieve their goals. As part of this commitment, we’re rolling out an enhanced communications support plan to increase awareness and visibility of our partner journals. Reflections on 2023 Convegno delle Stelline

Convegno delle Stelline is Italy’s only annual event for librarians and an important date in the calendar for all those with an interest in scholarly publishing. Frontiers was pleased to attend this year’s event in Milan. Credit: Frontiers Over 2,000 librarians attended this year’s conference and Frontiers participated as an exhibitor as part of the event’s Bibliostar fair. During the conference, key issues for discussion included the role of public libraries and their responsibility in promoting cultural well-being for diverse populations. Attendees also explored new technologies and strategies designed to support and facilitate structural changes, such as the transition to open access within scholarly publishing. Switzerland renews national deal with Frontiers

Frontiers announces that its national agreement with The Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL), first signed in 2022, has been renewed for another year. Credit: Frontiers The Swiss research community has once again affirmed its commitment to open access through the renewal of a national publishing deal with Frontiers. Signed by The Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries, the agreement simplifies the publishing process for both researchers and librarians. Ronald Buitenhuis, head of institutional partnerships at Frontiers, said: “This partnership is of great importance to us. Being headquartered in Switzerland, Frontiers is delighted to continue to offer significant benefits and support to authors in our home country. We look forward to a long-term collaboration as we work together to empower researchers.” The Swiss renewal is part of Frontiers’ expanding portfolio of international deals. Other recently agreed partnerships include consortiums in the United Kingdom, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Slovenia.
