Frontiers APCs: Structure and Rationale 2

In the past ten years since the founding of Frontiers, Article Processing Charges (APCs) have become widely accepted as the most transparent and sustainable mechanism of supporting Open Access publishing at high quality. As the sole source of revenue, Frontiers APCs are invested to hire expert teams, provide cutting-edge technology and high-quality services to support our community journals. Frontiers now employs 370 people across 6 countries and continues to release a new version of our Open Science Platform every two weeks, allowing us to ensure quality control and scientific excellence at scale. Experience has taught us that one APC does not fit all communities and we introduced differentiated APCs for our open-access journals two years ago. Specifically, we replaced a flat-fee structure across all Frontiers journals with a differentiated APC structure that takes into account the maturity level of a journal and differences in the level of research funding available in various disciplines. APCs went up for some journals and down for others. Frontiers internships provide a stepping stone for career success

Many rewarding careers have been launched through a paid internship at Frontiers. As one of the leading open-access publishers that is constantly developing innovations to enable knowledge to flow freely, we give early career academics the opportunity to branch out from research into research communication. “Doing an internship at Frontiers has been one of the best decisions I have made in my short career. I have had many internships but I was still unsure what career I would pursue. After 2 months at Frontiers not only did I know that I wanted a career in publishing, I also realized that I was good at it and enjoyed it,” said one intern who is now a fulltime member of the Frontiers editorial team. The best way to learn about an organization is to be immersed in it: interns are immediately considered part of our team and the work they do matters. “I was surrounded by supportive colleagues, challenged to think differently and given the opportunity to actively help shape the future of publishing. Frontiers articles now integrated with FundRef and CrossMark

At Frontiers, we are always looking for new ways to enhance our published articles to make them useful for researchers and scientists. This goes beyond simply publishing the latest research in our 54 journals that span across over 400 disciplines. Each year thousands of research papers are published in the many journals from publishers around the world. Keeping up with the most recent information available is challenging, which is why we have been working with CrossRef to integrate two of their services into our platform. Beginning this month, Frontiers articles will now include CrossMark and FundRef data when applicable. CrossMark lets people know whether or not they are reading the most recent version of a document. You’ll find the CrossMark logo appearing on all Frontiers articles published after August 24. By clicking on the CrossMark logo located at the top of the article, you’ll discover if there is an update to the article you are reading or if you are reading the most recent version. FundRef also will be integrated into Frontiers articles on August 24, and it will tell you who has funded the research if the funding institution is recognized by FundRef. Last updated October 1, 2018 Combining all its journals, Frontiers supports one of the largest groups of editors in the world of academic publishing, with more than 63,000 board members, enabling them to facilitate the publication of most recent advances in knowledge and research methods in their fields. But why do top scientists and scholars join a Frontiers’ editorial board? BUILDING A JOURNAL BASED ON YOUR BELIEFS One of the many reasons members of the research community have joined Frontiers is because they agree with our vision that oversight and quality control of the scholarly literature should be vested squarely in the research community itself and, in particular, involve active scientists and scholars at all levels. The final decision on what is and what is not published will be exclusively made by the academic handling editor of the manuscript based on the expert advice of their fellow editorial board members.
