Dr Marie Soulière engages in AI debate

Frontiers’ senior publishing manager Dr Marie Soulière is participating in two debates on the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scholarly publishing. The use of AI in scholarly publishing extends beyond production and review processes, as the launch of ChatGPT recently demonstrated. AI can be used to write academic papers with significant implications for research integrity. Marie Soulière, senior publishing manager at Frontiers, was heavily involved in developing Frontiers’ artificial intelligence review assistant (AIRA) and is participating in two debates on the boundaries of AI. “This is a very timely discussion on the ethical implications of AI in publishing”, says Marie Soulière. “We welcome everyone to participate in the debate and contribute to future guidelines on the use of AI.” Webinar on risk versus potential In the webinar “AI in Scholarly Publishing—Risk Versus Potential”, organized by the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), the discussion will focus on authorship by AI. Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development forms publishing agreement with Frontiers

Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde) has formed an institutional membership agreement for open access publishing with Frontiers. The institutional agreement means that eligible researchers will benefit from a streamlined invoicing process, managed directly between Frontiers and the Open Access team at the Library of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. The University Library at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development supports its researchers in making their research more widely available. This agreement will further encourage Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development researchers to publish open access, increasing the volume of research openly available. Anna Savage – The canary in the coal mine

Author: Natasha Inskip Dr Anna Savage is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Central Florida. She previously completed her PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institution. Recently, Anna has taken on the role of Specialty Chief Editor within the Behavior, Evolution, and Ecology section of Frontiers in Amphibian and Reptile Science.  The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 Life on Land is about aiming to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. UK universities renew national open access deal with Frontiers

Researchers from over 160 UK universities will continue to benefit from a simplified and streamlined route to open access publishing, thanks to the renewal of JISC collections’ partnership with gold open access publisher Frontiers.  The initial partnership with JISC, which undertakes negotiations and licensing for digital content agreements on behalf of UK universities, was first agreed in September 2019. It has been a landmark deal for researchers, furthering access to open science in the UK.  Under the renewed deal, which runs from 1 January to 31 December 2023, JISC member universities retain control of funding eligibility and benefit from a 10% national discount rate on publication costs. Dedicated account managers ensure a personalized customer experience.  Researchers affiliated with participating organizations can access personalized dashboards for engagement monitoring, collaborative peer-review and enhanced dissemination tools.  Ronald Buitenhuis, head of institutional partnerships at Frontiers, said: “We are delighted to further our partnership with JISC Collections and support open science in the UK. Aerospace Research Communications publishes first article with Frontiers

Aerospace Research Communications (ARC), the official journal of Zhejiang University Press (ZUP), has published its first article with its new gold open access publishing partner Frontiers.   Image credit: Frontiers ARC focuses on original research and review articles related to all fields of aerospace research, in both theory and practice. The scope of the journal is comprehensive, covering research achievements in flight vehicles, propulsion systems and experimental methods, including fluid mechanics, flight mechanics, solid mechanics, vehicle conceptual design, avionics, control, material engineering and mechanical manufacturing.   The journal’s first article in partnership with Frontiers explores recent progress in the application of machine learning technology in the field  —  currently a hot topic in aerospace science and technology.  ARC’s editor in chief Yao Zheng said: “The publication of ARC’s first article marks the beginning of the journal’s role as an important academic platform for international aerospace researchers’ communication and collaboration. Kelly Thompson – Bringing sex and gender differences to the forefront

By Katharina StockDr Kelly Thompson is the Director of Research Operations at the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District in Western Sydney and an active researcher at The George Institute for Global Health. Having led the Global Women’s Health program at The George Institute as Program Manager, Kelly has more than five years of experience overseeing research on the health of women across the lifespan. Her personal research looks at critical infections and sepsis through an epidemiological lens with a focus on health equity and women’s health. Kelly and I discuss the role of reporting on sex and gender differences in disease, the importance of language when talking about these differences, and what is needed to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5.Kelly is currently serving as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Global Women’s Health. Inspiring the next generation in STEM, Frontiers sponsors Potenti’elle en Science event

Research publisher Frontiers is a participating sponsor of the Potenti’elle en Science event taking place on 9 February 2023 in Lausanne, Switzerland. Hosted by the Suisse Romande chapter of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA), the event celebrates the annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It is designed to inspire young girls to learn more about careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  Photo credit: Frontiers Now in its third year, Potenti’elle en Science will be held for the first time as a hybrid, bilingual event in both English and French. During the three-hour event, students ranging from 8 to 18 years old will hear from keynote speakers and participate in dedicated workshops for each age group led by women currently working in STEM fields. Included among the fields represented are pharmaceutical and biotechnology, academia, and non-government organizations (NGOs). Frontiers announces new partnership agreement with FIIBAP

Spanish funding body Foundation for Biosanitary Research and Innovation in Primary Care (FIIBAP) has entered into a new partnership agreement with gold open access publisher Frontiers.    The agreement, which was finalized in December 2022, supports FIIBAP’s mission to promote research and innovation in the field of primary healthcare. Grantees supported by the Foundation will have their open access publishing charges covered under the terms of the partnership and will also benefit from engagement with global level experts as part of Frontiers’ collaborative review process.  Jaime Barrio Cortes, clinician and researcher at FIIBAP said: “we are very happy to enter into this agreement with Frontiers. Frontiers’ Volunteers: Thinking globally, acting locally

The growth mindset guiding Frontiers to support solutions for healthy lives on a healthy planet once again came to life through our annual volunteer efforts. At Frontiers, we believe each of us plays an important role in having a positive impact on society. That is why we are committed to contributing to communities in a meaningful and sustainable way. We encourage our people – affectionately referred to as Frontons – to participate in volunteering activities with charity partners. Alaya compiles available opportunities with vetted organizations into a digital catalog, allowing Frontons to filter these based on a variety of criteria, including cause, skills, and location, in order find the right match. The platform also gives Frontons a space to connect over these volunteering activities and encourages further participation, be it individual outputs or group initiatives. Frontiers partners with World Economic Forum

Frontiers has entered into a new partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF). The gold open access publisher will join the WEF as a platform partner, formalizing a longstanding collaborative relationship between the two organizations.  Photo credit: World Economic Forum As part of the new agreement, Frontiers will join the WEF’s Centre for New Society and Economy and will champion open science across the network. Rachel Parker – They are the answer

Author: Carolina Capelo Garcia Rachel Parker is a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). She has more than 20 years of experience in international education, including specific expertise in learning through play and global education. More specifically, Rachel has been leading, designing, evaluating, and managing education programs for development partners such as UNICEF, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Asian Development Bank, and the World Bank. Through ACER, Rachel leads Learning Through Play at School, a major four-year study on the benefits of playful pedagogies, as part of a joint project with the LEGO Foundation. She is also co-author of Frontiers in Education’s most viewed article of 2022, “Learning Through Play at School – A Framework for Policy and Practice” (Parker et al, 2022).
