Effect of achievement goal orientation on sleep quality among Chinese junior high school students: the mediating role of anxiety

    Previous studies have found that anxiety can affect sleep quality, while achievement goal orientation can affect both anxiety, and sleep quality. Then, does achievement goal orientation have a direct or indirect effect on sleep quality by affecting anxiety, ? In order to explore the influence of achievement goal orientation on sleep quality and the role of anxiety in this process, the achievement goal orientation scale, state-trait anxiety scale and Pittsburgh sleep quality index were used to investigate 305 junior high school students in Suzhou. The results showed that: (1) The detection rate of sleep problems in junior high school students was 26.2 %, and the sleep quality decreased with the increase of grade. (2) There was a significant negative correlation between the mastery approach dimension of achievement goal orientation and the total score of sleep quality. (3) The mastery avoidance dimension, performance avoidance dimension of achievement goal orientation and state-trait anxiety were significantly positively correlated with the total score of sleep quality. (4) Both state anxiety and trait anxiety played a complete mediating role between mastery approach and sleep quality. (5) Both state anxiety and trait anxiety played a complete mediating role between performance avoidance and total sleep quality.
