Internal exclusion as a 'dumping ground': Analysis of the perspectives of parents whose children have experienced internal exclusion in UK schools
Provisionally accepted- University of Cambridge, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Internal exclusion is an important topic which is under researched. This study explores the views and experiences of parents/carers in the UK about their child's experience of internal exclusion through a survey and in-depth interviews. Findings showed that parents felt the implementation of internal exclusion was given inappropriately, negatively impacted their child's MH, or was ineffective in improving behaviour. Parents of pupils with learning difficulties also found internal exclusion to be difficult. This study is important because it shines a light on families' experiences and perspectives, which can inform how internal exclusion practices should be implemented in schools.
