German National Library of Medicine (ZB MED)
Read, publish, and discover.
With no cost to you.
Your research is changing the world. We’re maximizing its impact by removing barriers to publishing, starting with article publishing charges (APCs) for authors. Our new partnership model with the German National Library of Medicine (ZB MED) makes publishing faster, easier, and free for researchers.
Under this agreement researchers affiliated with opt-in institutions will be supported to publish an unlimited number of peer-reviewed articles across all Frontiers journals. The agreement is Frontiers’ first flat-fee agreement in Europe and will run for three years starting in January 2024.
Rapidly share your findings, increasing visibility and impact within the academic community and beyond.
Build on your research with new findings, pursue innovative directions, and explore deeper the topics that matter most to you.
Develop your research portfolio and open doors to new career advancements.
All public and private research institutions in Germany, as well as state, regional, and specialist libraries, can opt-in to the agreement. German institutions already participating in Frontiers’ institutional partnership program may also opt-in to benefit from the deal.

Are you eligible?
We believe in the transformative power of open science. Articles published with us are free and permanently accessible worldwide - so anyone can benefit from the discoveries, not just a selection of researchers. Since this agreement covers two different institutional plans, to be eligible under the flat fee partnership ensure:
the affiliated author is the corresponding author.
the corresponding author must be affiliated with one of the institutions listed under flat fee agreements (see below).
the corresponding author uses their institutional email address.
If your institution has opted for a metered model, these requirements still apply but we also encourage you to contact your library directly to ascertain if further criteria needs to be met. Please note that under a metered model you can have full or partial APC coverage, depending on your institution's terms.
Our ZB MED partners
Our ZB MED agreement in Germany includes a range of institutional partners committed to supporting open access publishing.
Institutions covered by the flat-fee model benefit from unlimited publishing opportunities for their authors, ensuring seamless and unrestricted dissemination of research. For institutions participating under the metered models, authors are encouraged to verify coverage requirements with their universities to confirm eligibility. This ensures clarity on how publishing costs are handled and helps streamline the publication process.
Participating institutionsWe are proud to collaborate with these institutions in advancing open access and fostering accessible, high-quality research for all.

How to submit as a society journal author?
Frontiers actively promotes and fosters a sustainable shift towards open access for societies through collaboration and the publication of society journals on our platform.
Collaborations between authors and institutions can enhance visibility, credibility, and support for research dissemination. To ensure a seamless submission process, society partner authors must submit their work directly via their selected journal's website. This ensures adherence to the journal's submission guidelines, expedites the peer-review process, and guarantees that the manuscript is considered for publication in a timely manner.
