Organ toxicity mediated by drug metabolism represents a challenge in the drug discovery process and is considered a research area that would gain more importance from further work in this important field. The occurrence of drug-induced liver injury is the most common among metabolism-mediated organ toxicities and is usually the principal reason for post-marketing withdrawals. Given the remarkable advances over the past two decades in analytical technologies (notably liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, LC-MS/MS) for the detection, identification, and quantitative analysis of drugs and metabolites in biological fluids. It is important to characterize the metabolic profile of a new chemical entity in animals and human subjects.
The purpose of this special issue is to report the reason for organ toxicity due to drug metabolism and the importance of studying different factors that influence the identification and characterization of metabolites and reactive intermediates using different analytical methodologies and in-silico software.
This Research Topic will include but is not limited, to report:
- The detection, identification, and quantitative analysis of drug metabolites in different biological matrices.
- The use of advanced analytical technologies in drug metabolism profiling and screening of drug-drug interactions.
- Organ toxicities mediated by drug metabolism or drug-drug interactions.
- The role of reactive metabolites generation in the toxicity of drugs on different organs.
- The use of in-silico software to facilitate the identification and characterization of metabolites and predict toxic side effects of drugs or metabolites.
