Background

Plant growth and development are the consequences of multiple different genes’ expression by layers of sensing and regulation of multifactorial environmental cues, such as the plant pathogens (microorganisms & nematodes), insects, weeds, and external growth environments, which also affect plant adaptation, including resistance to pathogens, growth promotion, and stress tolerance. Meanwhile, plant pathogens pose serious threats to plant health, especially in agriculture, resulting in a 10-15% reduction in crop yield worldwide every year, which directly causes malnutrition, starvation, migration, and death. There are sophisticated networks of genetic, biochemical, physical, and metabolic interactions between plants and their associated pathogens/environments. Uncovering the underlying mechanisms of plant-pathogen/plant-environment interactions and exploring the applications of detailed plant protection methods can be of great value for plant cultivation, breeding, and utilization.
In the long-term coevolution of plant pathogens-host plant-external growth environment, they are gradually linked together and have established profound internal correlations. Recently, scientists have made remarkable advances in molecular mechanisms of plant-pathogen/plant-environment interactions, but research in the areas of their internal correlations and detailed plant protection methods tends to move along at a slow pace. We look forward to contributing to the explanation of the functional properties of plant pathogens/external growth environment in plant life.

The goal of this Research Topic is to expand our understanding of the molecular interactions between plants and pathogens/external growth environment, plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, and biological control, which will help to facilitate plant cultivation, breeding, and utilization to improve crop yield and quality in modern agriculture.
