Natural medicines, mainly derived from plants with some pharmacological activity, have thousands of years globally application history. Natural medicinal products are extracted and separated from natural medicines, contributing to the development of natural medicines. With the rising incidence of aging diseases accompanied by the advent of an aging society, cognitive impairment caused by aging has also become a hot research topic in the scientific community. Cognitive impairment refers to the degenerative changes in learning and memory or other cognitive abilities, which are closely related to the aging of the human nervous system. At the same time, many aging diseases can also induce cognitive impairment of varying degrees, which will seriously affect the health and life of patients and bring a heavy burden to the family and society.
At present, there are two types of drugs used to treat cognitive impairments: chemical drugs and natural drugs. Chemical drugs have exact structure, single component, clear target, and mechanism but sometimes with the side effect of neurotoxicity and nervous system toxicity. On the other hand, recent research has shown that many natural medicinal products have specific neuron protection activity, which can regulate and improve the nervous system through multi-component and multi-target. Therefore, the natural medicinal extracts that can prevent and improve cognitive impairment caused by aging and exploring the possible mechanism has become a hot issue in medical research.
This Research Topic will focus on preventing and improving various natural medicinal extracts on cognitive impairment caused by aging. The Research Topic includes the following aspects, but are not limited to:
• Effects of natural medicine extract on learning and memory impairment caused by natural aging
• Research on the relationship between aging and cognitive impairment and its corresponding mechanism of action.
• Effects of Natural medicinal products on learning and memory impairment caused by aging cerebral ischemic diseases (stroke, cerebral infarction, chronic obstructive pneumonia, etc.).
• Effects of natural medicinal extracts on learning and memory impairment caused by aging endocrine diseases (diabetes, insomnia, endocrine disorders, etc.).
Please note: Studies carried out with crude extracts/multiherbal preparations will not be considered for review. In contrast, studies that utilize highly purified, chemically characterized compounds meet the minimum criteria for investigating pharmacological effects. Where extracts are claimed to meet such minimum criteria, chemical structure and purity must be precisely described by appropriate analytical methods (e.g. chromatography and/or mass spectrometry).
