Since the introduction of geo-big data, we could observe how its role in social development and human-environment interaction has grown through the years. Multiple examples of geo-big data applications can be found in traffic prediction, agricultural planning, air quality monitoring, livelihood improvement, social justice, forest management, interregional development, green space accessibility, hydrological assessment, environmental diagnosis. This extensive use of geo-big data facilitates spatial information sharing, spatial data mining and can be applied to geographic assessment, prediction, analysis, and planning. The geo-big data era provides a new opportunity for the transformation of spatial planning and sustainable decision-making through revealing spatial regularity based on geo-big data.
The goal of this collection is to introduce academic outputs which adopt geospatial big data to facilitate intelligent urban governance. In the rapid process of urbanization, geo-big data serves as a crucial factor of technology innovation which covers all the aspects of urban systems (i.e., fundamental infrastructures, traffic networks, architectures, energy systems, etc.) Based on smart spatial analytical platforms and geospatial artificial intelligence technologies, geospatial big data can be used to empower urban governance in an intelligent and smart mode serving as an engine to monitor, assess, diagnose, and ultimately tackle urban problems, and optimize urban systems towards sustainable development.
This Research Topic invites paper submissions that focus on multi-source geo-big data for sustainable development and smart spatial planning decision-making. Three types of paper are recommended: Type A: original research, methods, review, hypothesis & theory, or policy & practice review; Type B: mini-reviews, perspectives, and brief research reports; Type C: data reports, policy brief. This includes, but is not limited to:
· Reviews on the state of the art in geospatial big data or geospatial artificial intelligence
· Agent-based simulation of human travel behavior
· Spatial analysis of urban functional zones, urban-rural integration, urban expansion, urban shrinkage, urban resilience, urban housing price
· Human livelihood concerning liveable communities, ecological land accessibility
· Optimal allocation of fundamental infrastructures like libraries, hospitals, gardens, sports grounds, energy supply facilities, emergency shelters, fire facilities, etc.
· Geographically monitoring the spatial-temporal patterns of agricultural land, mineral resources, etc.
· Urban environment monitoring including air quality, traffic condition, urban disaster risk.
Where possible, all papers are encouraged to include a section highlighting approaches and challenges for technology transfer.
