Mitochondria Apoptosis and Cancer: MAC 2021, is the 8th symposium in the series dedicated to the involvement and critical role of mitochondria in cell fate determination as it relates to normal physiology as well as pathological states, in particular cancer and age-related disorders. MAC 2021 will be held virtually at YLL School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore.
Mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, in addition to being the energy source, are also the target of insults aimed at deregulating cellular metabolism and survival. These changes are manifested as alterations in mitochondrial morphology and electron shuttling, thereby triggering aberrant redox stress/signaling. Interestingly, the acquisition of chemoresistance in cancer cells is associated with overexpression of anti-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family that localize to the mitochondria and prevent outer membrane permeabilization by the pro-apoptotic members of the same family such as Bax and Bak. As such, not only the understanding of mitochondrial biology but also its therapeutic targeting has direct implications in pathologies where the balance between survival and death is deregulated.
This special issue on MAC 2021 will feature review articles, perspectives, and original articles from speakers and opinion leaders in the areas of mitochondrial morphology, metabolism, epigenetics and therapeutics.
