Psychiatric disorders can affect our ability to successfully and enjoyably interact with others. Conversely, having difficulties in social relations is known to increase the risk of developing a psychiatric disorder and impacts symptom progression and health outcomes. With this Research Topic we encourage the view that psychiatric disorders can be construed as disorders of social interaction. Furthermore, we aim to elaborate how a psychiatrically motivated focus on the dynamics of social interaction may help to provide new perspectives for the field of social neuroscience. This may be crucial to realize social neuroscience's translational potential and to advance the transdiagnostic investigation of the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders.

This unique article collection in Frontiers in Psychiatry - Social Cognition welcomes all the article types accepted by the journal on topics including:
• Social impairments as characteristic (transdiagnostic) features of psychiatric disorders
• The neural basis of social interaction and its relevance for psychiatry
• Social interactions as risk or resilience factors for psychiatric disorders
• Developmental aspects of social interactions in neuropsychiatry

The aim of this Research Topic is to provide an overview of the current progresses and pitfalls in the research of social interaction in neuropsychiatry to guide future endeavors in the interdisciplinary field.
