Emerging and re-emerging viruses are serious public concerns. The examples of the recent outbreaks include dengue and chikungunya fever in tropical and sub-tropical regions, Zika in the Americas and the Caribbean, LASV, and Ebola in African, and the SARS, MERS, and influenza A around the world. The World Health Organization has released ten threats to global health in 2019, and Ebola, dengue, SARS, MERS, and disease X made the list. These emerging viruses are usually highly contagious and lethal, causing mass mortality and economic loss.

There are only limited options against these emerging and re-emerging viruses, which call for effective vaccines and therapeutics. In particular, the broad-spectrum antivirals against a large class of viruses are urgently needed. Driven by our understanding of the mechanisms of viral pathogenesis, novel techniques have been developed and used to engineer a new generation of targeted vaccine candidates and vaccine adjuvants against emerging viruses. Also, many small molecules, peptides, and human monoclonal antibodies have been proved to be effective candidate therapeutics against emerging viruses.

In this Research Topic, we will focus on the most recent discoveries in antivirals for emerging viruses. We seek contributions of original research article as well as reviews. We encourage authors to present multi-perspective researches, including structural and functional studies of vaccines, antigens, adjuvants, antibodies, peptides, small molecules, herbal ingredients, and any innovative therapeutic strategies against emerging viruses.
