The majority of the world population lives in coastal areas where space has always been a commodity. In the near future, the waterfront may reclaim or change the utilization of large parts of existing land space as the sea level rises with global warming. There is thus an increasing interest to evaluate the merits and challenges for the use of ocean space.
In EU funded Horizon 2020 project Space@Sea 17 partners have set out to develop a modular floating island solution. Through the modular approach, flexibility in size and application is greatly increased. Applications on the islands are widespread, within the Space@Sea project aquaculture, transport and logistics, energy generation and maintenance and living are studied. Applications will be both individual and in multi-use business cases. Design of the floating modules consists of design of the optimal size and shape as well as the mooring and connections of floaters. The installation and maintenance of the floaters is also considered. Space@Sea will conclude at the end of 2020 by a demonstration of the modular floating island concept.
Please note that this Research Topic will also consider manuscript submissions from outside of the Space@Sea project.
