Nonlinear photonics is the technology which exploits the optical nonlienarities of materials to induce new phenomena and achieve new functions. This Research Topic aims at introducing scientists with an optics background to the concepts of nonlinear photonics, focusing on the hot topics that are driving technological and scientific research.
This Research Topic will initially introduce the general concepts of nonlinear optics, with particular attention to the fiber and integrated optics platforms (both III-V and silicon). Then contributions will focus on the main applications and fundamental research involving nonlinear optical processes (optical soliton and supercontinuum physics, frequency combs, parametric sources of quantum light for quantum photonics, wavelength conversion, distributed optical sensors, optical imaging and attosecond physics).
Research themes should include:
1. Introduction a. Nonlinear optics
b. Modeling of nonlinear phenomena
c. Nonlinear materials
2. Integration a. Integrated nonlinear silicon photonics
b. Integrated nonlinear III-V photonics
c. Nonlinear optics in fiber
3. Phenomena a. Soliton physics
b. Frequency combs
c. Supercontinuum generation
d. Wavelength conversion and new frequency generation
4. Applications a. Attosecond physics
b. Nonlinear optics for optical sensors
c. Nonlinear optics for quantum science
d. Nonlinear optics for signal processing
e. Nonlinear optics for distributed sensing
f. Nonlinear optics for imaging and lifescience studies
This Research Topic is mainly based on the lectures and poster contributions that were presented at the 10th Optoelectronics and Photonics winter school on Nonlinear Photonics in Andalo, Trento (Italy)Nonlinear photonics is the technology which exploits the optical nonlienarities of materials to induce new phenomena and achieve new functions.
