The clinical spectrum of pediatric disorders related to immune system dysfunction is highly heterogeneous, ranging from immunodeficiencies and infections to allergies and autoimmune/chronic inflammatory diseases. Early diagnosis of an immune-related disease is critical because it may lead to more effective approaches to therapy and appropriate anticipatory guidance. Despite the rapid advancement of knowledge on child’s immune system development and function, the complexity and the multi-factorial nature of these disorders have hampered the progress in defining epigenetic mechanisms of immunoregulation, triggering environmental factors and early-life biomarkers of immune alteration.
Through a translational approach, unravelling the complexity of immune regulatory and signalling mechanisms involved in major immune-related pediatric diseases will help to improve diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and provide further insights into the future care of children.
This Research Topic will provide a comprehensive and updated overview of the patterns of immune-related disease development in children, also mentioning current available diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. We welcome the submission of Reviews and Mini-Reviews articles covering, but not limited to, the following major topics: immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, allergy and infections in the pediatric age.
