There has been a surge in studies highlighting the key role of the gut microbiota in host homeostasis. Many health disorders, such as those involving the immune system and metabolism, are associated with gut microbial dysbiosis. Importantly, this has led to numerous microbial effectors being described, and with it their involvement in the regulation of host homeostasis and modulation of physiology. This has all been made possible by the development of functional metagenomics which has allowed for the identification of these microbial compounds.
Beyond health perspectives, these compounds have been shown to have utility in the agro-food and biomedical industries. Synthetic biology is a powerful tool for production of these microbial effectors through engineered biological systems for use in these industrial applications.
