Transcatheter mitral valve (MV) repair has emerged as an effective treatment option for symptomatic severe mitral regurgitation (MR) in patients considered to be inoperable or at high operative risk for MV surgery. In primary MR, surgical repair is the standard of care.
Transcatheter edge-to-edge MV repair with the MitraClip system has the largest clinical experience to date and offers a sustained clinical benefit in selected high-risk surgical patients.
However, other trans-catheter MV repair techniques such as annuloplasty (direct or indirect) and chordal implantation are notable alternatives and are rapidly establishing their roles in the field of MR therapy. Hence, it is imperative to understand the indications and limitations of these various transcatheter MV interventions to provide the best and most up-to-date clinical care for patients.
The aim of this Research Topic is to provide an overview of transcatheter MV repair, emerging from surgical concepts, including leaflet repair, chordal replacement, annuloplasty, and to discuss the challenges they face and future directions in achieving successful clinical application. Emerging technologies for percutaneous MV repair and potential complications associated with these procedures will be also discussed.
