About this Research Topic
Antimicrobial resistance is a life threatening, urgent global health problem. There is increasing concern regarding the alarming emergence of MDR superbugs. Infections resulting from such pathogens are barely responsive to treatment with few, if any, antibiotics currently available; reviving memories of the pre-antibiotic era and raising concerns regarding a post-antibiotic era.
Given the complexity of the antimicrobial resistance challenge at the interface of human and animal health, combined with the impact on the environment, it seems particularly important to emphasize the role of a One Health approach in addressing the problem. Unifying efforts to combat and overcome this hurdle requires a multifaceted approach. The cornerstones of this task are the understanding of resistance mechanisms, the utilization of combination therapy for potential therapeutic options, and the discovery of novel antibiotics and/or targets.
The findings of studies submitted to this Research Topic must reflect an understanding of the mechanisms of resistance in Gram-negative pathogens, the use of combination therapy to treat complicated MDR infections, or the discovery of novel antibiotics with potential novel targets or new mode of actions.
Keywords: resistance mechanisms, combination therapy, novel antibiotics, natural products, mode of action, therapeutics, antimicrobials, inhibitors
