The interface between blood cells and endothelium represents a crucial environment in triggering processes that regulate tissue homeostasis. In particular, endothelial cells, when activated by stimulating agents, recall granulocytes or monocytes within the tissue and this leads to a variety of events, ranging from inflammation to atherosclerosis. Indeed, activated blood cells stimulate a cascade of negative reactions that normally is counterbalanced by body response, resolving with the help of endogenous mediators, such as proresolving lipidic and/or gaseous mediators. Nevertheless, if the response is not well tackled, the process could exacerbate leading to chronic impairments. Several studies have demonstrated that multiple diseases, such as atherosclerosis, ischemia or diabetes, are based on inflammatory processes. In all these cases the role of the blood cells/endothelium interaction is crucial in the onset of the pathological condition. Similarly to granulocytes or monocytes, also other cell types such as erythrocyte or platelet could engage endothelial cells generating physiopathological responses and facilitating leukocytes migration into the underlying insulted tissue.
Despite the growing body of evidence highlighting the importance of interaction between blood and endothelial cells, there is still a need to further elucidate the mechanisms involved in terms of cell-cell activation and how this could be used in tackling inflammatory based cardiovascular diseases (IBCDs) within a therapeutic approach.
Therefore, the main goal of this Research Topic is to shed more light on physiopathological events driving vascular and inflammatory diseases, which are based on what actually happens to the interface between blood cells and endothelium.
