Successful developing of therapeutic approaches for neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases remains a major research challenge. All types of stroke, cerebral small vessel disease, and Alzheimer’s disease account for a significant proportion of serious physical and mental impairment cause a significant loss of quality of life and result in enormous socio-economic burden.
However, the last two decades were characterized by a tremendous progress in understanding the neurobiological and systemic pathomechanisms behind those diseases, and important reasons for previous failures in translating treatment concepts into the clinics have been unrevealed in parallel. Finally, the breakthrough that mechanical recanalization brought for acute stroke treatment impressively illustrated that major success in augmenting our arsenal to fight devastating neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases are definitely possible.
This recent progress in basic, translational, and clinical research not only motivated the initiation of numerous new research initiatives but encouraged researchers to investigate entirely new field in order to gain a more systemic, if not holistic view on neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Exciting developments have been reported in the fields of central nervous system / the immune system interaction (including the influence of the microbiome), for biomaterials and cell-based treatments, in brain imaging, basic mechanisms of neuronal de- and regeneration in ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, and different forms of dementia. We also saw great progress in understanding the role of microcirculation and non-neuronal cell populations in and for health and disease.
This Research Topic aims to collect lighthouse examples for the most exciting and recent developments in the area of Neuroprotection and Neurorepair. We particularly encourage the submission of basic research reports, papers on translational studies including early-stage clinical research, and thoughtful reviews. However, other articles types, for instance, papers describing significant methodological advances or providing thought-provoking novel concepts and theories, will also be considered. Submitted contributions may address, but are not limited to the following topics:
A. Novel Therapeutic Concepts for Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Strokes
B. Recent Progress in Vascular Dementia and Alzheimers’ disease
C. Brain-Immune Interactions and Neuroinflammation in CNS Health and Disease

F. Non-neuronal Therapeutic Targets: Glia, Endothelial Cells, and the Microcirculation
G. Novel Pharmacological Approaches, Cell-based Therapies, and Biomaterials
