Founded in 2011, the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET) has become the scientific home for a steadily growing, highly interdisciplinary community of researchers dealing with the study of the complex interactions of living microbial cells and electrodes and the development of novel, sustainable processes and applications. With the growth of the community we have been witnessing an impressive development: Technologies like microbial fuel cells, combining wastewater treatment and energy recovery, have developed from a scientific peculiarity to a technology en route to application. At the same time, we see a diversification of research - from the original concept of microbial fuel cells to a plethora of derivative technologies, such as microbial electrolysis cells, microbial desalination cells or microbial electrosynthesis - and from fundamental research to application.
The heart of the ISMET activity is to bring the community together for scientific exchange and discussion, by organizing a bi-annual international ISMET conference, alternating with three regional ISMET conferences in the in between years. The three regional meeting represent the regional communities in Asia-Pacific (AP), North America (NA) and Europe (EU). In 2018, these three meetings will take place: September 12-14, 2018 EU-ISMET: Newcastle, United Kingdom October 10-12, 2018 NA-ISMET: St. Paul, Minnesota, USA November 13-16, 2018 AP-ISMET: Goa, India
In a Publishing Partnership between ISMET and Frontiers in Energy Research, this Research Topic summarizes the research progress presented in all three regional meetings and thus serves as a central platform for the dissemination of the latest research progress in this research field. Papers are invited covering all aspects of microbial electrochemistry and technology - from fundamental to applied research.
