The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathways were initially discovered by developmental biologists in Drosophila. Hh signaling plays a decisive role during development by regulating numerous different signaling cascades that control cell division, growth, differentiation and cell death. Aberrant activity of Hedgehog pathway has been broadly associated to various aspects of cancer, from tumorigenesis to metastasis. Recent research on the role of small molecules inhibitors of GLI and smoothened, and clinical trials to antagonists of Hh-Gli pathway have validated that could be a good anticancer target.
The crucial aims of this research topic are to investigate not only the recent advances but also identify the gaps in the fields of developmental biology, cancer etiology, and Hh inhibitors, using mammals, mouse and fly as models. We also welcome the authors to contribute to this Research topic by submitting either original studies or review articles. We also encourage the submission of studies that combine several disciplines and tools such as Hedgehog and development, genetics and cancer, aberrant hedgehog pathway in cancer, Hh signaling and its mutation in cancer and development.
Submission of research papers on the following topics will be highly appreciated:
• Role of aberrant GLI signaling in ovarian and gynecological cancer
• Role of HH/GLI pathway in cancer stemness
• Updates of HH/GLI pathway inhibitors for treatment of cancer
• Role of HH/GLI pathway in Pancreatic and Colon cancer
• Role of aberrant GLI signaling in Breast and hematological cancer
