Research carried out in recent years has shown the relationships between brain functioning, physical exercise and sports. For example, the positive associations between physical exercise with aspects such as attention or executive functions have been highlighted, positive acute effects of physical exercise have been pointed out, as well as the impact on both children, adolescents and older people. Structural and functional changes in the brain have also been linked to physical exercise and some cognitive functions seem to be related to sports performance. However, it is still necessary to expand the information on what type of physical exercise programs are most suitable, what specific cognitive skills can be developed and what sports skills are most benefited. How can the findings be incorporated into the daily work of professionals who are dedicated to the field of physical activity and sports?
The aim of this Research Topic is to publish studies whose substantive and methodological approaches include, as a central element, aspects related to the main topic “Physical Activity, Sport and Cognitive Functioning.” The methodological and substantive spectrum will be broad, because this topic brings implications with different knowledge areas and segments of the population. Thus, we aim to collect a wide range of studies who will consider several methodologies, analysis, variables, materials and populations. We welcome articles containing some type of conceptual, methodological or related contribution to this Research Topic.
We welcome in particular papers dealing with:
(a) Relationship between type of physical activity and cognitive functioning;
(b) Relationship between different physical abilities and cognitive functioning;
(c) Impact of physical exercise programs on cognitive functioning;
(d) Relationships between cognitive abilities and sports performance;
(e) Other similar topics.
