The global cement and concrete industry generates such a large volume of engineered mineral products that it inevitably becomes a major contributor to the global environmental footprint of humanity, both in terms of Greenhouse gases, and also other forms of emissions to air, land, and water. As we seek to reduce this impact, while still providing the materials needed for global development of housing and infrastructure, it is clear that we need to innovate in the design, production and use of cements and cementitious materials.
This Research Topic aims to span these aspects of the necessary improvements in sustainability in the cements sector, incorporating topics including (but not limited to):
- improved and innovative production routes for cements and cementitious constituents
- alternative cement binder chemistries
- more efficient use of supplementary cementitious materials, admixtures and additives
- innovative routes to waste valorization in cements
- modelling and simulation of cementitious materials to advance sustainability
- cement and concrete design for sustainability and durability
- innovative cementitious repair materials and methods to extend the service life of existing structures
We particularly welcome submissions that present a scientifically and technically rigorous approach to the area of innovation in cements for sustainability. Engineering or waste valorization case studies must be accompanied by analysis of the underpinning science that brings broadly transferable new insight, going beyond demonstration that a specific type of material or waste can be blended into cementitious products.
