There has been a major increase in aging population in the world since 1900s, which brings a lot of health problems and a huge financial burden on healthcare systems. Aging is the major risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, finding ways to maintain healthy aging is a very important research area. If we can intervene with molecular aging mechanisms, we might be able to reduce the risk of age-related neurodegeneration.
This Research Topic aims to highlight and cover recent progress on the role of Sirtuins in neurodegeneration and brain function. Sirtuins are NAD-dependent protein deacetylases that have been shown to have beneficiary effects against age-related diseases. The recent understanding of the role of different Sirtuin homologs in aging brain and neurodegeneration paved the way for investigating and identifying new therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases. This Research Topic will include both molecular mechanism of brain aging and the effect of age-related pathways on neurodegeneration. A particular focus of this Research Topic will be on Sirtuins and their role in brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
