20 years ago, transverse waves in the solar corona were first detected. Since then, coronal waves have been used intensively for seismology, resulting in new information on the sub-resolution structure, thermal properties and transport coefficients of coronal loops. In the last decade, it has become obvious that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are omnipresent in the solar corona. This opens new opportunities for MHD seismology of the solar atmosphere. Moreover, it raises the additional question if and how these waves are relevant to coronal heating.
In this Research Topic, we welcome original contributions that discuss new developments in analytical and numerical modelling of solar atmospheric waves, observational studies of MHD waves in the solar atmosphere with the latest instruments, or the confrontation between state-of-the-art observations and models. In particular, the authors are encouraged to address the questions how the solar atmospheric waves can be used for seismology and in how far the waves are important for heating the solar atmosphere.
