Great progress has been made over the years, ranging from what cell sources to use to novel biomaterials, from in vitro studies to pre-clinical animal models as well as novel technologies, such as minimally invasive implantation strategies using tissue engineered valves. Translation to the clinic seems to be at hand, but what final hurdles remain? Can we overcome these hurdles? And will all patients benefit from a tissue engineered valve substitute?
This Research Topic focuses on just that: What innovations brought us where we stand today and what promises does the future bring? It aims to unite the field of heart valve tissue engineering in one Research Topic that discusses this exciting field of research that is on the verge of the next decade of highly innovative research and technology development, working towards the ultimate goal of clinical application. This Research Topic will consist of contributions by leading groups in the world, flanked by high-quality open contributions from excellent scientists in the field.
