Pharmacology can be defined as the study of the effects of chemical substances on the function of living organisms. In this way, pharmacology is, in essence, a translational discipline, linking biomedical and chemical sciences with the clinical practice. Thus, the formation and growing of Pharmacological Societies around the world has been, and will continue to be, key in the development of integrated basic, experimental and clinical sciences. In this context, initiated by a group of Chilean pharmacologists in 1978, The Chilean Society of Pharmacology is proud to announce its 40th anniversary. The Society of Pharmacology of Chile (SOFARCHI) is a non-profit scientific society whose main objective is the promotion of research in pharmacology, both theoretical, experimental and clinical. From the social point of view, our Society has endeavored to promote the proper use of medicines, making known the main effects, both therapeutic and adverse. SOFARCHI has experienced important growth over the last 10 years, with the number of active members rising to over 170, making our Annual Meeting one of the main scientific events of our country.
Our Society has a broad range of capabilities, our members particularly excelling in several specific areas, such as the pharmacology of neurodegenerative processes, pharmacological control of inhibitory ion channels, characterization of neuroactive compounds from natural Chilean sources, dopaminergic and purinergic pharmacology, cardiac fibroblasts regulation, gastrointestinal control of brain function, Latin American population pharmacogenomics, among others. In order to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our Society, in terms of academic growth and general public dissemination, the present Research Topic intends to promote and collect original research studies as well as review, commentaries and perspective articles that provide novel advances and future directions in the pharmacological areas in which our current members have significantly contributed in recent years. However, it should be noted that the present research topic will be proud to receive articles from investigators of other scientific Societies in themes that fit within the scope of the listed specialty sections: Translational Pharmacology, Neuropharmacology, and Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Pharmacology.
