Endocrine disrupters (EDCs) are chemicals (natural or human-made) that are capable to interfere with the endocrine system of an organism. These compounds can mimic natural occurring hormones and bind to and activate a specific nuclear hormone receptor at a time or in a tissue where they should not be activated, thus being potentially harmful for the proper physiology and homeostasis of the organism. In recent years more and more clinical, experimental, developmental and physiological data are pointing to an effect of EDCs on cellular metabolism. Moreover EDCs exposure have been found responsible for a wide spectrum of metabolic disorders in humans.
This Research Topic covers all aspects of endocrine disrupters and metabolism in humans and in model organisms (mammals, other vertebrates and invertebrates). One of the goal of this Research Topic is to cover several types of endocrine disrupters targeting nuclear hormone receptors and different organs and tissues with a clear link to metabolism. Our aim is to foster a platform to bring together all levels of endocrine disrupters and metabolism researches, including but not limited to disease, development, clinical data, public health data and Omics studies.
