Somatization symptoms are key symptoms in psychiatric disorders, such as somatization disorder (SD), major depressive disorder (MDD), general anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorder (PD). Accumulated evidence suggests that somatization symptoms can predict the severity of MDD, and great residual of somatization symptoms will predict high recurrence in MDD. However, the neuropathology underlying somatization symptoms in psychiatric disorders remains unclear. Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide powerful tools to examine brain anatomical and functional alterations underlying somatization symptoms in psychiatric disorders.

This Research Topic will synthesize present knowledge about somatization symptoms and explore neuropathological mechanisms underlying somatization symptoms. It will also address important conceptual and methodological questions. Clinicians will benefit from this Research Topic in regard to theoretical, experimental and clinical questions related to the nature, origins and functions of somatization symptoms in psychiatric disorders.
