This Research Topic will be based on the presentations from invited speakers and proceedings arising from the conference “Biology of Ageing: Impactful Interventions” in Singapore (14-16 November 2017) organised by the Agency for Science Technology and Research, the National University of Singapore and the National University Health System in partnership with King’s College London.
Reversing ageing, slowing down ageing, preventing diseases are important keywords for a greying nation and the world. Our invited experts will talk about what is really happening: from animal models that help us explore new ways to intervene and also understand mechanisms to human trials that provide hopeful results. “Impactful interventions” is the focus of this conference as we wish participants to have a better understanding of how to extend human health-span in a practical and efficient way. The conference keynote lecture by Prof Valter Longo on the fasting mimicking diet is an example of implementing an efficient and easier to comply intervention. The diet mimics the effects of periodic fasting by activating pathways that lead to significant effects on metabolism. Other promising research on the latest interventions will form the invited Research Topic articles from world experts in the field of ageing research.
Singapore is a fast-ageing country and its Research, Innovation & Enterprise 2020 plan aims to make Singapore a knowledge-based economy. In the research and development hub that Singapore has created, ageing of the population is an important topic that spans across various strategic domains. Health and Biomedical Sciences is one of the four priorities in the RIE2020 framework (www.nrf.gov.sg). The five conditions identified as priorities: cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and other metabolic/endocrine conditions, infectious diseases, neurological and sense disorders – are preventable age-related diseases. Prevention of diseases onset should be taken as a priority over treating diseases and slowing ageing will delay the onset of many of them. This proposed Research Topic articles will highlight the current “state of the art” in ageing and longevity research by the global leaders in the field invited to attend the conference.
