Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemical (EDCs), such as bisphenol A and phthalates, have been implicated in development of cardiometabolic diseases, like type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. To date, few studies have considered the interactive effects of EDC exposure during multiple vulnerable developmental life stages, and little is known regarding the underlying biological mechanisms that link EDCs to adverse metabolic health.
This Research Topic call welcomes human and animal studies exploring the effects of exposure to individual EDCs and/or EDC mixtures during single or multiple sensitive periods throughout the life course (e.g., the gestational period, infancy, early childhood, peripuberty, pregnancy, perimenopause) on cardiometabolic health. This call also welcomes studies interrogating mechanisms that mediate the relationship between the EDCs and metabolic health (e.g., epigenetics, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiome, interference with hormone receptor activity).
