Recent advances in the understanding of the biological basis of cancer development and progression have shed light on the major role played by the tumor microenvironment. In particular, recent works provide strong evidence that the microenvironment is a major determinant of tumor metabolism, highlighting the importance of tissue of origin. In addition, extracellular nutrient and intracellular metabolite levels have a direct impact on epigenetic gene regulation. This has important implications and motivate further delineating the influence of the microenvironment on tumor development by investigating the complex interplay between cell signaling, metabolic and (epi)genetic reprogramming in response to the extracellular milieu.
Recent international expert congresses, such as the “Keystone Tumor Metabolism: Mechanisms and Targets Conference” and the “EMBO Conference: Advances in cancer cell signaling and metabolism”, further emphasize the importance of this topic for improving our understanding of the biology of cancer and for uncovering novel therapeutic avenues.
This Frontiers Research Topic shall provide a platform for active and interdisciplinary discussion, summarize current state-of-the-art knowledge on tumor microenvironment and its link with cancer metabolism, cell signaling and (epi)genetic regulation, and offer new perspectives on developing novel therapeutic approaches.
